Old DeArmond Mill Being Demolished

The DeArmond Mill, the last lumber mill to remain operational in the city of Coeur d'Alene, is finally being demolished. The mills' owners had said in February of this year that DeArmond would continue to operate until it ran out of lumber and inventory. That day has come and gone and now the mill, which employed about 60 people, is being torn down.

Concerned residents are now wondering what will become of the land that the mill once occupied. The current plan is for the Black Rock developer Marshall Chesrown to buy the property for $10 million and then sell it to the education corridor partners. The education partnership in favor of this move consists of University of Idaho, Lewis-Clark State College, Boise State University, Idaho State University, North Idaho College, the city of Coeur d'Alene, and its urban renewal agency the Lake City Development Corp.

If the property is acquired for the use of the education corridor, it is proposed that NIC will expand its campus north, while LCSC and U of I expand their satellite campuses south.
