Walk to Prevent Suicide
Walking can help prevent suicide, that is, when you're walking in an "Out of the Darkness" community walk. One such walk will take place here in Coeur d'Alene on the 27th of this month. Details in the Calenar. The Coeur d'Alene community walk will start at O'Shay's restaurant, follow the centennial trail to Steamers Wayside, and loop back for a total distance of 3.8 miles.
These community walks are put on by the American Foundation for Community Prevention (AFSP) to help raise money for suicide awareness and prevention. Over 8 million dollars has been invested in suicide prevention studies and programs by the AFSP since 2000 and that number is continuing to grow with more than 100 community walks planned for this fall alone. Attendance for these walks is also increasing with the introduction of incentive programs for people who bring in the most fund raising. For example, anyone who brings in $5000 or more will receive a mini dv camcorder or lcd television.
If you are interested in registering for the Coeur d'Alene community walk (which is free) or want more information check out the Out of the Darkness website.
